The Portland Chapter was awarded the Otto Kroeger Chapter Growth and Development Award in 2007 from the Association of Psychological Type International. The award represents the appreciation of the contribution we made to type and the APTi over the past years. It was especially noted that our chapter did an excellent job of hosting the International Conference in 2005. For winning that award, we were given $500 to mentor another chapter. We mentored the WA State (Seattle) chapter that just became an official chapter. We are now part of a vibrant Type Region!
Carolyn McCall, founder of the Portland Chapter and long-time Chapter Coordinator, was awarded the Outstanding Chapter Leadership award in 2007. We’re very proud of Carolyn that her work was recognized by APTi. She is our first Emeritus Board member of the Portland Chapter. Congratulations, Carolyn!

Welcome to the Portland Chapter for Psychological Type. We have worked hard to build a community where everyone is welcome who is curious about psychological type and wants to learn more about how people are naturally different. You can be a beginner and want to know about the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator® or someone who is a professional counselor, consultant, education administrator or a parent who wants to understand their kids better.
We are very proud of the mission of our organization; to promote the continual understanding and development of self through Psychological Type and the ethical and responsible use of assessment tools such as the MBTI®.
This has been an amazing year for our Chapter. Not only have we added some highly innovative and motivated members to our team, but we have expanded our horizons to learn about new tools and hosted the largest most successful workshop PAPT has had in ten years (Dr. Dario Nardi on the Neuroscience of Personality).
We hope that you will come and try us out. If you’ve got any questions, contact us.
We hope to see you at a future event.
Very best regards,
Pam Rechel, Chair
Pam Rechel- Chair - (ENFJ) “I was qualified to administer the MBTI® in 1995 and began immediately working with teams. I’ve had the opportunity to facilitate MBTI workshops all over the USA, in Taiwan, Singapore and in Ireland. I am currently the Western Region Chair for APTi (Association of Psychological Type International (www.aptinternational.org) which means that I work with the Chapter leaders in the West to help them be successful. For the past 3 years, I have been the Chair of the Portland Chapter.
In my work life, I am an organization consultant and executive coach with Brave Heart Consulting (www.braveheartconsulting.com) in Portland and Seattle. I also facilitate courses in Accountability and how leaders can get more done without burning out employees www.countonmeaccountability.com.
Breah Goff-Program Chair- (INTJ) “I am a senior at the University of Oregon studying archaeology, however my passion is for the understanding and development of people through the navigation of their lives using Type as a foundation. I currently develop and facilitate workshops for the Career Services Center at the University and have presented for PAPT and ASTD on Networking and Type. I was certified in the Myers-Briggs in 2007 and pride myself in my continued education through at LEAST one full day workshop a year on Psychological Type.”
Lisa Wylie-Website coordinator- (INTP) “I first encountered the MBTI during post-layoff outplacement counseling. I discovered that my INTP preference is relatively rare, especially among women. This and other insights about INTP’S explained a lot of what I'd experienced in my life to that point, and sparked my desire to learn more about personality type theory. Professionally I have engaged in various "creative analytical" pursuits including: market research for high tech, usability testing, technical writing and direct marketing analytics. In my spare time I enjoy cooking, knitting, remodeling (I rewired my house!) and participating in PAPT activities.”
Ken Steinke-(INTP) Member –at-Large- “Not unlike many people, I came to type while looking for answers to ‘why do people do what they do’. That was about 25 years ago. Since that time I have attended a qualifying course in Portland and have done a few training sessions for work peers and also for friends. I don’t use type professionally; I work as a consultant in the food industry, but find it very useful when working with the variety of people I run across. The Portland PAPT chapter has been an ongoing source of inspiration and information, it is a great group.”
Steve Walsh- Secretary-(ENFP) I have obtained a considerable background and demonstrated considerable interest in MBTI having completed the Step I training program, completed the Step II training program, and attended the International APT Conference held in Portland.
Since 1983, I have taught a broad range of Business, Management and Statistics courses, including, on-line courses, as a professor at Clark College in Washington. My educational background in clinical psychology and business contribute to my deep interest in psychological type. I am currently responsible for Greeters at the P-APT meetings.
Annie Battee-Treasurer- (ENFJ) “I learned about the Myers Briggs during my Master's Degree studies and was certified 10 years later. That led to me finding the Portland Chapter when I moved to Oregon in 1987and I have been an active participant ever since. In 2005, when Portland was the site of the APT International Conference I had the privilege to work on it other Portland Chapter volunteers. Knowing type and participating with others who share this interest has broadened my circle of friendships and professional networks.”
Linda Elliott-Workshop Chair (ENFP) I was introduced to type in the 1990’s while serving as the only woman on an all-male management team. Learning about natural preferences helped move us to greater appreciation for one another and added to our cohesiveness over the years.
I became certified in MBTI in 2009 while completing my MA in Depth (Jungian) Psychology in Northern California. A growing understanding of type dynamics contributed to my masters’ thesis on the “Integration of Opposites at Midlife and Beyond.”
Since locating to Portland in fall 2009, I’ve completed Step II training and developed a group workshop for people in work/life transition. I call it “Getting to What’s Natural.”
I joined PAPT in 2009 and now serve on the PAPT Board as the 2010/2011 Workshop Chair. As an ENFP, I’m known as ‘a catalyst who moves things forward.’ This forward-moving energy comes in handy with the planning and execution of our annual PAPT workshops.
Berry Huelsman (INTJ) Member at Large
I bring a wealth of ideas and experience to the PAPT board. As an INTJ I naturally think in terms of possibilities - all the time. I have served on the program committee and tried my hand at being chairman and treasurer. It seems like every two years I make some sort of presentation at P-APT meetings. Recent topics have included Using Myers-Briggs to Begin an Arranged Marriage, Problem Solving (with Pam R), and Applying the MBTI to Mathematics Anxiety. Berry presented his thoughts on mathematics anxiety at the July, 2005 International APT Symposium. During that presentation he sang and brought one attendee to tears by reciting his ESFJ poem. Berry is known for using video clips to illustrate type preferences.
Monica Schneider (ENFJ) Member at Large
Monica coordinates "Dinners with visiting Type professionals". Since 1983 I have used the MBTI in my personal, family, and work life. I see it as a multifaceted tool that has benefits in communication and problem solving. I occasionally offer team building workshops and use the MBTI as an educator in Psychology at PCC, Cascade Campus. My greatest enthusiasm is learning and our P-APT meetings have been a terrific resource. I would like to support the learning and sharing of more information and applications.
Mary Ellen Kirian (ESFP) Facilities - As a guest presenter at church, I often refer to the MBTI to encourage people to build self awareness and communication skills. In my current role as the Distribution Center Manager at Medical Teams International, Type helps our team celebrate differences and build on individual strengths. Medical Teams International provides a wonderful, convenient location for the Portland Association of Psychological Type and shares their Real.Life. Exhibit with P-APT participants. I serve on the Board as Member at Large to assist the Board as needed.
Yes, we’d like to have you get more involved in P-APT. We have needs for short volunteer opportunities (1-2 hours), as well as longer term responsibilities (1-3 hours per month).
We currently have vacancies on the Board. If you’d like to join a great group of people committed to creating a great organization, contact the Chair.
Greeters: We love to make our members feel welcomed as soon as they step in the door and we are always on the lookout for warm and enthusiastic people to help us do just that.
Workshop Helpers: With so much going on at our workshops there is still so much to do. We are always looking for people who want to get involved and help out with some of the tasks such as; troubleshooting, greeting/registration, promoting PAPT, cleanup and so much more.
Membership outreach: We think there are many people and organizations that would be interested in our programs…if they knew about them. We’re looking for folks who will make phone calls and send emails, have coffee with folks to introduce P-APT.
Summer programs: Summer is a time to get out and promote our mission, to get people involved in what we are about as well as exercising ourselves mentally and physically in the world. We need people who want to get out there in the world and get some ideas flowing for the rest of us and get things started. In 2010 we’ll have our first summer picnic (August 7th).
Board Members: Our board members help to keep us grounded and connected as an organization and even if you don’t have the time to pursue involvement as a board member with an active role, we also have members at large who attend our board meetings, and are included in organization oriented discussions as well as have a vote in proposals we make.
Presenter Topics: Type can find a home in any aspect of life, however sometimes we need a little direction in our topic choices for our meetings. We are always on the lookout and open to suggestions, feel free to let us know.
Examples: Conflict and Type: Conflict is always a hot topic and in this presentation we were introduced to the relationship between the ladder of inference and type and how blind spots that are a natural part of our ability to take in information can impact the inferences we make.
Golden Profiler: We love talking about new and exciting tools above and beyond the MBTI, and unlike other personality assessments, this profiler is unique in that:
Neuroscience of Personality: In April 2010, we were pleased to host this workshop with Dr. Dario Nardi, The Neuroscience of Personality: Brain Savvy Insights into Personality Type. We had 100 people attend this interesting workshop.
In 2008, our day long workshop on In the Grip hosted by Naomi Quenk, well known author of many publications on type. The topic was Stress and and how, when stressed, we all tend to ‘devolve’ into our grip functions or an exaggerated version of our opposite type.
Request for Testimonials: Hello everyone, PAPT is redesigning our website and making some great changes to the content. One of the additions we think is important are what our members have to say about our organization, so if you could take a moment to tell us what you think of P-APT or how it has made a difference to you we would really appreciate it. Send testimonials to: Webmaster [add email address]
”There is always something new to learn from the presenters, as well as the participants. Sometimes it is a topic that I have heard before but it is presented in a different way or I am at a place in my life to hear it in a different way. It is always worth my drive from Salem. The people who attend range are from those who just heard about type to all levels of knowledge. This brings a broad perspective. Many have become friends, as well as people I can contact for professional input." ~Annie
